About The Event
Join us for a special film showing of "Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North," a feature documentary that follows descendants of the DeWolf family of Rhode Island—the largest slave-trading family in American history—as they embark on a journey to learn more about their family's past.
Through visits to their ancestors' hometown of Bristol, RI, the slave-trading coast of Ghana, and their forebears' plantation in Cuba, they come face to face with the weight of their family's history. What they learn along the way leads them to question what comes next, and how they can find ways to repair the harm committed by their ancestors.
The discussion following the film will draw parallels to First Church's own legacy of slavery in Cuba in the late 19th century. There will also be a reception with refreshments. Please RSVP using the form.
