Youth Programs Overview

Youth Programs are an crucial part of First Church’s mission and we are proud to have a very active and well supported Youth Program. Led by the Director of Youth Programs, Julie Ennis, there are two central youth programs:

Coming of Age is a one year program for 9th graders currently meeting Sunday afternoons, 4:30-5:45. This program focuses on creating an open, caring and meaningful community among the youth and thereby creating the space for them to explore their developing spiritual, social and ethical self. It culminates in a service in spring where the youth present their individual credos to the congregation, seen by many as one of the highlights of the church year for the whole community. The meetings are enhanced by overnights, the fall ropes course, and social action of various kind.

Youth Group is a largely youth run program for grades 10-12 deepening the open and caring community to allow the youth a weekly retreat from the pressures of high school life to give them space to develop spiritually, socially and ethically. Supported by staff and volunteers, the weekly Sunday evening meeting (7-9) is enhanced by overnights, weekend retreats, biannual service and learning trips during winter break, and many more activities.

In close collaboration with the Director of Youth Programs, Julie Ennis, the Youth Committee, led by chair Leslie Wolf, is governing and representing these programs within the church.
