Our Whole Lives
Lifespan Sexuality Education
5th/6th grade (February – May)
The 5/6th grade OWL curriculum is framed around justice, inclusion, self-worth and responsibility. Topics include healthy and safe bodies, puberty, decision making, family relationships, communication, sexual orientation and gender roles, as well as the act of lovemaking and reproduction. The program uses the book “It’s Perfectly Normal”, which features cartoon illustrations and a light-hearted approach to discuss sex and reproduction. Please note: this OWL curriculum is age appropriate for grade 5 and 6 and not the same content as 8th grade OWL. In order for a youth to participate, parents must attend a required parent orientation. The class is offered at 9 a.m. from February through May, each year. There is a fee for this class; scholarships are available if needed. Families may choose to have their youth take the class in either grades 5 or 6. For those youth not enrolled in OWL, traditional RE will be offered.
8th grade (January through May)
In the winter and spring months, the eighth graders will have the opportunity to participate in Our Whole Lives (OWL) a sexuality education program designed to model and teach caring, compassion, respect and justice. It aims to help youth affirm and respect themselves as sexual beings and to respect the sexuality of others. It is our hope that the participants will gain knowledge, values, and skills to lead sexually healthy, responsible lives. In order for a youth to participate, parents must attend a required parent orientation which will be held in December. Class will take place on Sunday afternoons, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. . There is a fee for this class; scholarships are available if needed.
