Organist / Assistant Music Director
Dylan Sauerwald is a distinctive continuo player, soloist and music director across the US and Canada. He won the first place title in chamber music at the Concours de Musique du Canada 2009 and was a finalist at the Montréal Baroque CBC⁄Galaxie chamber music competition 2007, both with Ensemble la Félicité. He has performed in halls from Montréal’s Musée de Beaux Arts to Taipei’s National Recital Hall to Boston’s Goodlife bar. As a continuo player, he has been compared to “the best jazz rhythm sections” (Boston Musical Intelligencer), and as a soloist he has been featured by the Cambridge Concentus, Emmanuel Music, the Buxtehude Consort and Sonnambula.
A versatile player, Dylan has been featured on WGBH radio performing on lautenwerck as part of a celebration of J.S. Bach’s birthday. He appears on harpsichord, organ and lautenwerck in the world premiere recording of David Funck’s 1677 collection Stricturae Viola de Gambicae on New Focus recordings, and he can be heard on harpsichord and fortepiano on a series of recordings of regency-period dance music with Ensemble Musica Humana. Also on the fortepiano, he recently recorded with the Handel & Haydn Society for their upcoming recording of Haydn’s orchestral works.
Dylan has a special interest in early opera; he was founding co-director of Helios Early Opera, a project devoted to reviving seldom-performed baroque operas with innovative modern stagings. Dylan has been music director and harpsichordist for Helios’ critically acclaimed productions of Cavalli’s Artemisia, Charpentier’s David et Jonathas and Telemann’s Pimpinone. He has music directed staged productions for Ensemble la Félicité and Ensemble Musica Humana, and is a regular repetiteur for the Amherst Early Music Festival, Venice Opera Project, Tafelmusik Summer Baroque Institute, and others.
Dylan has performed with the Handel & Haydn Society, TENET, Emmanuel Music, the Cambridge Concentus, Les Sirènes, Lorelei Ensemble, Sonnambula, The Weckmann Project, Ensemble Musica Humana, Ensemble ad Libitum and many others. He lives in Boston and holds a BMus in early keyboard performance from McGill University and an MMus from Boston University.
