Registration information for Children’s Music Program

Dear Choir Families –

As the summer rapidly passes us by, it’s time to start thinking about this fall, and the annual First Church Musical! This year the children’s choirs will be presenting “The Magic Flute,” by Mozart, from November 17th through November 20th. I am in the process of adapting the opera for our children, and I couldn’t be more excited about it! Please read through this entire letter, as it contains important information regarding the whole year.

For children participating in the musical, choir begins September 12, 2016.  From September through early November, we will prepare for a production of “The Magic Flute.” Performances are November 17th (5:30pm); November 18th & 19th (7:30pm); and November 20th (3pm).

The link can also be found on our website,, under “Music Programs for Children and Youth.” All students must be registered for this year in order to participate. Children from kindergarten through high school are welcome to participate!

The choir program is not limited to church families or past participants only! Please pass this information on to friends and classmates of your children, and they will be welcome to join! It is important to note, however, that all participants in the musical must also continue with the children’s choir program for the entire year. This provides numerous other wonderful opportunities for the children to perform, and they form an integral part of our Christmas services.


Students in Grade 5 and above are invited to audition for a solo part in the musical. There are many parts to play, all of them with an integral role in the production as a whole. Auditions will be held Wednesday, September 14th, and Thursday, September 15, from 4:30-6:30. At the first rehearsal students will be asked to sign up for only one 1-hour block for auditions. Please help your children be aware of any conflicts your family may have. Auditions are required to be considered for a solo role in the musical, but are not mandatory. All interested students will be given a role in the play. Junior Choir (K-Gr. 4) students do not need to audition.


Junior Choir (K- grade 4) singers will be in two performances – either Thurs/Sat or Fri/Sun.  

Chancel Choir (5th and 6th grade) and Youth Choir (7th grade and above) singers will be in all four performances, frequently playing one role Thurs/Sat, and another role Fri/Sun.


Junior Choir (K – Gr. 4) will start rehearsing on Monday, September 12, from 6:00 to 7:00. During the musical, they will rehearse every Sunday afternoon sometime between 1:30 and 3:30, and every Monday sometime between 5:30 and 7:00. Children will not be required to stay for this entire time. Exact rehearsal times will depend on the casting decisions made. Please pay attention to scheduling emails as the season continues.

Chancel Choir (Gr. 5/6)  and Youth Choir (Gr. 7- up) will begin rehearsals on Monday, September 12, from 7:00-8:30. During the musical, both choirs will rehearse Monday evenings from 7-8:30, Thursday afternoons sometime between 3:30 and 6:30, and Sunday afternoons between 3:30 and 6:30. Children may not be required to stay for this entire time. Exact rehearsal times will depend on the casting decisions made. Please pay attention to scheduling emails as the season continues.

Additionally, children cast in roles with significant solo parts (Grades 5 and up are invited to audition for these roles) will be asked to rehearse during some additional times, most frequently Saturday during the day.

During Tech Week, the final dress rehearsals are scheduled for Monday and Wednesday evenings, and will be long. Additional information about the timing will go out as the date approaches, but students must be available for the entire time. During the final week, any and all class, sport, or appointment conflicts must be cancelled.

The cost to participate in “The Magic Flute” is $115 per singer. Fees may be mailed to the church or brought to the first Choir rehearsal. Some financial aid is available. Please do not allow fees to be a deciding factor in your child’s participation in the musical.

Parent volunteers are needed to produce the musical and all families are asked to volunteer in some capacity. (See VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES at the end of the Registration Form). There are many different areas where we need assistance, so please consider carefully where you would feel the most comfortable helping out.

After the musical, and for all children participating in just the choir, rehearsals start on Monday, November 21st- Junior Choir 6:30-7:00, Chancel Choir 7:00-7:45, and Youth Choir 7:45-8:30.

All three children’s choirs will perform during four services throughout the year: during the winter holiday season, and both early and late spring 2017.  Again, while it is not necessary for all singers to participate in the musical, it is required that all musical participants be in one of the Choirs throughout the church year. Please note: There can be some flexibility regarding Choir participation during the spring sports season. Please contact me directly if there are any questions about this.

As participation in the children’s music program brings with it many learning and growth opportunities for the students, as well as performance opportunities throughout the year, all families are asked to make a pledge or gift of financial support to First Church for the 2016/2017 church year. This is in addition to the participation fee for the musical. The gift need not be large, but we are hoping for 100% participation among choir families for this year’s pledge drive. The $115 fee to participate in the Musical is not considered a gift or pledge – preparation for the Musical includes eight weeks of drama and vocal training, and this fee helps to defray production expenses. Please make a commitment to give directly to the Church during the Stewardship Campaign in order that the varied programs we offer can continue.
