Mark your calendars! The First Church annual musical is coming! Performances of “The Wizard of Oz” will be in the Parish Hall Thursday November 12 at 5:30, Friday and Saturday November 13 and 14 at 7:30, and Sunday November 15 at 3:00. This is not something you want to miss! The children did a wonderful job learning their choreography on Sunday afternoon, and the Junior Choir is hard at work learning all of their solos. The show is coming together!
Many thanks to the Nova Choir for a wonderful Schubert anthem, and to the Senior Choir for an excellent rendition of the Herbert Howells “Like as the Hart.” It’s not an easy piece, and you sounded magnificent! Thanks also to Irina Kareva, for the absolutely lovely Brahms offertory!
Looking ahead, on Sunday October 25th, the Senior Choir will be taking a slightly different approach to the anthem. They will be performing “Laus et perennis gloria,” by Jacobus Gallus. Gallus, also known as Jacob Handl, was a late-Renaissance composer of Slavic origin, born in 1550. He was a very prolific composer for the Counter-Reformation, adding many sacred choral works to the Catholic repertoire. His pieces are usually quite complex, often involving multiple choirs – sometimes with up to 24 individual parts! “Laus et perennis gloria” is written for two choirs, and the Senior Choir will be standing on both sides of the Sanctuary, creating a true antiphonal effect. The text is as follows:
Laus et perennis gloria,
Deo Patri et filio,
Sancto simul Paraclito,
in seculorum secula, Amen.
Praise and perpetual glory
be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost,
now and forever, Amen.
I hope you will join us for some wonderful music!
