March 13–15, 2015
At the Essex Conference Center
Registration deadline: October 10, 2014
To the Women of First Church:
We hope to have the pleasure of your company at the First Church Women’s Retreat this year.
Our annual women’s retreat creates new friendships and strengthens existing ones. We share our thoughts, explore our spirituality, laugh together, and enjoy community meals prepared by the staff. You’ll have the opportunity to join in group activities and to spend some quiet time in reflection and self-restoration.
The theme we’ve chosen for March is “juggling”: how we handle the multiple demands on our time and interests, from home and family to work and volunteering to caring for ourselves.
The Essex Center is nestled in an 18-acre forest just 45 minutes from Boston. The house is three stories high with two large gathering spaces, a dining room, 19 bedrooms, and 14 single-occupancy bathrooms, each with a sink, shower, and toilet. Most rooms have two beds. Every window in the building looks onto trees.
A few steps away from the main building is a spa building containing a hot tub, a wood-fired sauna, and changing rooms. Next door is a beautiful outdoor fire pit with upright logs for seats; it’s surrounded by a high wall of perfectly stacked wood. Weather permitting, it will provide a wonderful setting for our Sunday worship service. (In addition, the center staff offers the makings of s’mores by the fire each night.)
There are walking paths on the grounds, and a nearby country road leads to the Essex estuary and a picturesque community of summer houses less than a mile away. A lovely garden with a waterfall, landscaping, and unusual sculptures contribute to the feeling of peace and tranquility. The property is surrounded by 250 acres of conservation land.
Places are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so please register right away if you’re interested. We will be able to accommodate 37 women. Partial scholarship assistance is available.
Important note:The Essex Center is not handicap accessible. Reaching even the bedrooms on the ground floor requires climbing some stairs, and the area we will use for most of our gatherings and activities is on the second floor.
Cost: The cost for the weekend is $205 per person, which includes tax. In addition to two nights’stay and 6 meals, it covers use of the hot tub and sauna.
Essex requires a down payment by October 15 and an additional payment in early January. This means that the attached registration form must be accompanied by a nonrefundable deposit of $100. (The remainder will be due in January.) The deadline to reserve your place is Friday, October 10. Last year we had a waiting list of 8 women, and all of them were able to attend because others had to cancel. If someone is available to take your place, your deposit will be refunded.
We look forward to seeing you at a wonderful 2015 retreat.
