Teachers needed for English as a Learning Language (ELL)

  • English as a Learning Language (ELL) at the UU Urban Ministry
  • Teaching women who have been victims of domestic violence
  • Program was started by Patricia Garcia in 2009
  • Currently about 10-15 students receive free instruction in English twice a week, while their children are cared for by volunteers from Horizons for Homeless Children. (co-founded by First-Church member Linda Mason)
  • Classes meet for 2 hours Monday and Wednesday mornings
  • Teaching is fun, requires no prior experience, and is tremendously fulfilling.

  • Giving these women language skills is essential for their successful futures, and allows them to aid their children’s educational progress.
  • More teachers are needed to provide individual help, possibly on additional mornings
  • Four FCB members are now teaching: Barbara Terry, Trish Webb, Nancy Davis and Lanier Smythe
