- English as a Learning Language (ELL) at the UU Urban Ministry
- Teaching women who have been victims of domestic violence
- Program was started by Patricia Garcia in 2009
- Currently about 10-15 students receive free instruction in English twice a week, while their children are cared for by volunteers from Horizons for Homeless Children. (co-founded by First-Church member Linda Mason)
- Classes meet for 2 hours Monday and Wednesday mornings
- Teaching is fun, requires no prior experience, and is tremendously fulfilling.
“When you educate a woman, you educate a nation.” African proverb
- Giving these women language skills is essential for their successful futures, and allows them to aid their children’s educational progress.
- More teachers are needed to provide individual help, possibly on additional mornings
- Four FCB members are now teaching: Barbara Terry, Trish Webb, Nancy Davis and Lanier Smythe
- If you would like more information, give any of the above members a call or email or contact Kate Wilkinson at kwilkinson@uuum.org.
